Awesome gift idea: White Castle Candle.

I've just heard about this and I think it's awesome! I'm a big fan of offbeat gifts and I'm considering handing a few of these out for Christmas....

Do not adjust your screens. You are actually seeing this. It's a White Castle Slider scented candle. Burger and onion. Seriously, can you believe this? This is so awesome, I'm having a bit of a fit over here!

Now, I haven't smelled this, so I don't know how it compares to the real thing, but still... Burger scented candle. Enough said.

I don't believe that there's any sort of continued charitable contribution resulting from the purchase of this, but this week they did donate $500,000 of the profits from the sale to the Autism Speaks organization. That's pretty noble!

Each candle costs $13 and is available for purchase online (WhiteCastle.com) or at any of the 420 White Castle locations Nationwide. (On a sidenote- are there really, actually exactly 420 White Castle locations? Did they do that on purpose?)

China Glaze Rodeo Diva Fall 2008 Revisited

This collection was released in 2008 but to this day, even after the dozens of new collections that have been released since then, China Glaze's Rodeo Diva remains one of my favorite collections of all time. This is what a fall collection should look like.

When I posted my swatches two years ago I was so excited about these colors that I rushed and posted pretty crappy pictures. I just couldn't wait, I was so thrilled that I had to post them immediately! But the lighting was bad, my application was shaky and I had some broken nails. So, I figured it was about time I try to do these amazing polishes justice.

Here they are once again, the incredible China Glaze Rodeo Diva polishes.

Branding Iron. A deep blackened red shimmer. One of my favorite kinds of colors! See how it looks dark on the edges and light in the middle? I can't get enough of those colors.

Cowgirl Up. Amazing red-purple shimmer. Possibly in frost territory? The shimmer is really fine like a frost but this is just too pretty and smooth to be a true streaky-silvery frost. This shade looks really amazing in the sunlight, it has hidden iridescent shimmer!

Golden Spurs. A warm light suede brown base with gold shimmer. This one doesn't look that great on me but I still love the color. So much pretty gold shimmer!

Gussied Up Green. I remember this being my favorite one when I first got this collection, but now I can't pick a favorite. This is a blackened blue-leaning green shimmer. Very dark but when the sunlight hits it it really sparkles.

Lasso My Heart. A mauve purple foil. Not as dense or silver-toned like most foils, this one is pure color and very smooth.

Midnight Ride. Extremely dark purple shimmer. Dark and dramatic. Looks mostly black indoors but in the sunlight you get glints of glorious purple.

Prize-Winning Mare. Similar to Golden Spurs in concept- a light brown base with gold shimmer. This one is much more shiny and metallic, though, and not as warm. The overall effect of this one is actually more of a bronze foil metallic look than just a plain shimmer.

Red Stallion. This color never photographs right for me! It's so metallic and shiny that my camera freaks out. It's a bright metallic red, very glowy, almost radioactive.

Rodeo Fanatic. Medium blue shimmer. Seems to be a tiny bit on the teal side- doesn't look like straight pure blue to me. Maybe there's a touch of green in the formula?

Side Saddle. The base of Side Saddle is a dark brown-toned plum shade. Raisin perhaps? Brown and purple, a bit like Lancome Lizzie Jagger. The shimmer in this is very shiny light gold.

Wagon Trail. What a cool color. It's a black base with gold shimmer but it combines on the nail to look like a olive green. Looks amazing in the sunlight.

Yee-Haw! Orangey, coral-ish pink and gold shimmer. Quite warm. Has an almost duochrome look to is because the pink-coral-peach base and the gold shimmer are each so strong that you see more gold where the light hits it and more pink where the light is indirect.

This was during the area where China Glaze's formula was on the iffy side. Runny, drippy yet thick. Remember those days? The formula on these was actually not bad, but not the easiest to control. I did three coats in all these pictures. Drying time is on the long side for some colors but not for all of them.

Still love this collection... Still get excited about it every time I see the colors. Not very many polish collections have that sort of effect on me!

I don't think any of these colors are particularly hard to find even though they're a few years old. I wonder if any of them have been made permanent? I'll have to find out!

Intro to Spooning: How does it work?

Here's a little step-by-step guide to help you get acquainted with the idea of Spooning with Zoya. It may seem a little strange at first, but you'll end up hooked on Spooning in no time!

First, you visit zoya.com and pick out spoons of colors you're interested in- I am using Tosca as an example because it's the first search result, but Zoya Spoons are available in every color.

http://zoya.com/content/38/item/Zoya/TOSCA-SPOON.html <-- First step: get spoons! Then, in a couple of days, they'll arrive in a pretty little Zoya envelope!

Oooh, aaah! Neat! So... step 2: open the envelope! (With these particular spoons, Zoya demonstrates how to pick your perfect red).

You don't need to take the spoons out if you don't want to, but when you do they look like this:

Note the item number and shade name clearly printed on the handle. No hand-scribbled sharpie smudges here, these are neat and professionally labelled, bar code included!

Step three: Try on the color!

Here's the beauty of spoons: they fit over your nail to give you a clear idea of how the color will look on your actual nails! They're on the large side so I am using my thumb as an example. Hmm... not sure I like the oval nail shape on me! Haha!

With the spoons you get a true-to-life representation of color. Here's a closeup:

The color you see in the spoons is what you get on your nails. No more confusing or misleading stock photos that make you buy the wrong color!

Spoon color is even more accurate than bottle color because sometimes a color can look different when it dries. Here's how they compare to bottle color:

Jade, Nidhi, LC, Ruby, Carmen, Andi.

When you purchase Zoya Spoons (50 cents each), Zoya will email you a code for the value of the spoons. It will also be available in the "My Account" section on Zoya.com so you don't lose it. So say you order $3 worth of spoons like there are pictured here... You'll have a $3 credit toward your next purchase via a one-time-use code. That leads me to step four: Order your polishes with the spoon credit!

You don't have to buy the same polishes that you picked spoons for. You can pick any polish. Maybe some of the colors didn't work for you, or maybe you want some Armor topcoat instead of another polish color. The Spoon credit code will go toward any color or treatment. The spoons end up basically becoming free previews. Pretty sweet, eh?

I think this is an awesome idea for online polish shoppers and I wouldn't be surprised to see other companies 'borrowing' this idea in the future. It's way more useful than that completely inaccurate color picker with the photoshopped hand that you see on some other salon brand polish websites. You get to see the actual color, in person, against your very own skin.

Here's Zoya's spoon explanation (taken from Zoya.com):

"What's a Zoya Color Spoon?

Zoya Color Spoons are clear plastic, spoon shaped devices with actual nail polish poured in the nail shaped tip. Before you order a bottle of a color you are not sure of, order a color spoon of that color instead. You can order as many (or as few) colors as you would like. When you receive the Zoya Color Spoons, simply hold them up to your nails and see what the actual color will look like on your nails as though you applied 2 coats and a clear top coat. You never have to worry about ordering the wrong color again.

Ok here is the best part: Zoya Color Spoons SHIP FREE (Economy Ground). That's Right, weather you buy 1 or 200 spoons you do not have to pay for shipping unless you want to upgrade to faster shipping.

So how much are the Zoya Color Spoons? Well they are basically FREE. When you place an order for Zoya Color Spoons you are charged $0.50 per spoon, but as soon as your order is invoiced and ships you will receive an email with a personalized promo code for a discount in the amount equal to the amount you spent on spoons to be taken against you next order. You can use your coupon code towards the purchase of the real color you want to buy or any merchandise on our websites. You can even use it to buy additional color spoons."

Though, I am slightly confused about that last line because in the fine print on the press release it says you can't use the code to buy more spoons... Here it says you can use the code to buy more spoons. I'm not sure which is correct!

Color spoons are available now on Zoya's website!

(These were sent to me for review.)

Best thing ever: Orly Royal Navy

Orly Royal Navy. I don't know if I've ever felt this strongly about a blue polish before. I've always loved blue, I find that blue polish really flatters my skintone and I wear it quite often. I have a rather obscene amount of blue polish. But this blue.... I've never seen anything like it. It blows all my other blues out of the water. First of all, it looks like a creme but if you look closely it is accented with tiny little iridescent green glitter flecks a la Pure Ice Heartbreaker. They are not a stand-out feature of the polish- this does not look like your usual jelly plus glitter combination. It mostly strikes me as a creme polish with subtle glitter accent. The glitter is so small it's almost more just fine shimmer, but you can see definite pieces and particles.

Second, this is insanely vibrant. It's dark but bright at the same time. It must have some neon pigment to it because it dries semi-matte. It is the brightest bluest richest blue I've ever worn. It's so blue that it even looks like there's a hint of rich violet added to it.

It was truly love at first sight. It was much different than I anticipated- from the promos I thought it would be like a blue Ruby Pumps, but it's so much better. I saw the bottle and I think I got heart palpitations. I can't even describe how much I love this. And, just when I thought it couldn't get any better than this, Mr. Scrangie commented on it. He said, "Holy crap, that's crazy! That's so vibrant, it's insane." It gets his seal of approval too! Ha!

I wore it for a few days in a row and decided to try to spice it up a little more and ended up with this:

...Which I think looked okay, but I don't know how much I like the speckled silver stamp. I think I want something more crisp looking next time. Or perhaps a stamp in bronze or gold would look cool against the blue too.

But now I'm obsessed with this polish. I keep reaching for it. I'm wearing it on my toes right now and it makes me want to wear sandals just so I can keep looking at my feet.

BB Couture Vampy Varnish Collection

I know this came out ages ago... I have been wanting to post it but I've had such crazy anxiety about it. Let me explain my messed up head... This collection isn't like some regular collection the mostly faceless polish companies spit out every three months. This collection is special and important because it was designed by not just a fellow blogger but a friend. Therefore, it deserves perfect pictures.. special attention to detail... Keen observation... I've actually been afraid I'd mess up my review or pictures and miss some great detail that the creator intended to be noticed, or maybe my pictures would be bad and I wouldn't do the polishes justice. So yes... performance anxiety... I haz it. I'm like this with anything special. I don't even consider myself a perfectionist, but if it's something someone I know made I always want to get it just right.

But, in honor of Kelly aka Vampy Varnish's birthday, here it is, the BB Couture collection she created.

Kelly's Green. A vintage muted avocado green base with flecks of silver, pale iridescent green and black microglitter. You may need to enlarge to see the black glitter. The glitter particles are small and don't take center stage in this polish- it works as a whole package and gives me them impression of stones. Are there green stones? Like river rocks with veins of granite.

Mendocino Midnight. A very tricky polish. Sometimes I think it looks mostly green... sometimes I think it looks grey-green... sometimes it looks like blue-green with a faint pink flash. It's deep and dark and does have a subtle pink shimmer to it, and to make it even more interesting it's packed with green and gold and blue slightly iridescent glitter. Very complex.

Napa Valley Red. Now this is a red I can love. It is slightly deeper than this in real life but I wanted to be able to capture all of the glittery goodness of this polish in bright light. It's a deep wine red jelly base with a little bit of a purple undertone and lots of sparkly pink-toned red glitter. When I look at it in direct light I can even see very tiny flashes of violet sparkle. This is the type of color I think of when I hear 'vampy'.

Redwood Forest. My picture makes this look more blue-toned than it really is. In real life it's more vibrant and has a lot more yellow to it. It's a medium saturated forest green with a sprinkling of fine silvery glitter. Some of the glitter looks blue to me, but I can't tell if it's actually blue glitter if it's cause I'm looking at it through green polish. Either way, it's a dream color for me. Glittery forest green. I've been looking for a color like this for a long time! It's really beautiful, I don't think my picture captures it at all. I really need to re-do this one again. It keeps coming out so blue!

Union Square. Super super sparkly bronzed taupe foil. This one is hard for me to describe! Being a foil, it's made up of little metallic particles, and this has a few different colors swirling around to make one color on the nail. It has some lighter champagne colored flecks, some deeper bronze colored ones and some in-between taupe gold ones. The end result is this shimmering earth toned foil.

Vampy Varnish. The crown jewel of the collection. Seriously. This is *amazing*. I have put a massive dent in my bottle of this, I even wore it back-to-back for almost two weeks. How do I describe this? The base is a deep, dark, foreboding green jelly- deeper and darker than NARS Zulu. It has glitter. Boy, does it ever have glitter. It has blue glitter. It has green glitter. It has gold glitter and even what looks to be a tiny bit of silver glitter. And it sparkles, majorly. The sparkling glitter lights up the vampy green base and makes a really nice contrast. I love when there are jelly polishes with glitter because you can see the glitter in the lower layers of the polish and it adds a lot of depth and just looks freakin' sweet. This is like the forest in summer on a moonless midnight. All you can see are the flashes of the fireflies against dark green foliage.

The formula on these was good. BB Couture standard, pretty much. Not thick, not thin, nice medium texture. I did three coats of all and that was pretty much perfect. You could do two coats with most of these, but I think the third coat added more depth and color to the glittery dark shades. Dry time is a little longer than I'm used to, but not really what I'd call long. Longer than OPI (with Seche) but not anywhere near as long as something like Orly or Barielle. I'd say about half an hour for complete dryness. Because the glitter is so fine, removal wasn't too difficult either. All around solid formula, good bottles and brushes, good wear time.

I think it goes without saying that I love this collection. I mean, look at it... It's all green and glitter! And it's unique! The only polish in this collection that I can think of something similar is Kelly's Green. Golf Pro looks a little bit like Kelly's Green but it's definitely not a match, and it came out months after... I wonder if it was an early prototype? Now I'm curious. But anyway, all around amazing collection. It seems like Kelly and I have similar taste because I'm majorly digging these. I think she did a great job on these.

Sally Hansen Project Runway

Sally Hansen Project Runway. Isn't this spectacular? Look at all the little gold sparkles!! This one was apparently only released in Canada (WTF, Sally?!). A dear friend gave me the entire collection and I've been meaning to do a full review of it, but I can't believe I haven't posted about this green yet! A lot of people ask me what my favorite polishes are and I have a hard time answering. The answer is: It changes every day! No... more like... every 15 minutes. This is one of my newer favorites. It's totally a fantasy polish. It's like a deep, mossy, magical forest, or maybe a fish tail swimming through a murky green lake with only a few rays of sunshine glinting off the water. I could go on and on about this polish... It's not just an amazing color, it evokes lots of pretty imagery in my head. And that's something important to me in a polish- the ability to not be 'just a color', but to remind me of things, bring back memories or inspire me.

Overall Beauty Sale Haul!

Eeek they're here! I'm been dreaming about these nonstop since I first saw them and now they're finally here! *squeal* (Click these suckers to enlarge, they're ginormous!)

Kelly's Green, Redwood Forest, Vampy Varnish, Mendocino Midnight, Union Square, Napa Valley Red. OMG SO HOT

These are Kelly of Vampy Varnish's personal creations! Check out her swatches!

These came along for the ride as well:

Studio 54, Saturday Night Fever, Hard-On Nail Strengthener, Top Rock Topcoat.

Studio 54 almost seems a little frosty, Saturday Night Fever looks like it could be twinny to Emerald Sparkle. I'll admit, I only bought Hard-On for the name and Top Rock because it's scented. Heh.

Looks like they made the bottles smaller, as you can see in the second picture. They're .5oz now instead of .6oz.

I can't wait to try all of these on. OMG I'm so excited. SO MANY GREENS!!! SO MUCH GLITTER!!!! The colors, Duke!

New Fing'rs Nail Decals

Okay, they're *kinda* new... I took these pictures probably 4 or 5 months ago when they *were* new and never got a chance to post them... But still... they're cool. And new-ish.

You all know that Fing'rs makes my favorite nail decals. You know, the ones with the little skulls and bats? The ones I'm wearing all the time? Well, now they have even more cool designs... take a look!

These are from Fing'rs EDGE... This is the Royal Punk Nail Art package. Take a look full size! We've got hearts, skulls, skulls with hearts, hearts with crowns, butterflies, nautical stars, crossbones, crowns, silver jewels. So cool. LOVE these. They go right along with my other favorites from them. The one major difference between these and the other ones with the skulls is that there's more decals in this set- four sheets as opposed to only two. BONUS!

These are from Little Fing'rs and they're called Girlie Nails. I know, I know... Pink package, cheerleading stickers, the word "girlie" on the front... You can't believe I bought these, can you? But I did, I totally did (I even bought a backup)! And can't you see why?! NEON SKULLS! DOGGIES!!! Doggies and kitties and bunnies and penguins and piggies and owls... Ohhhh the little paw prints... I may keel over from the cuteness. I love it so much. I'll buy anything with a doggie on it- I even used to buy that one toilet paper because it had a doggie on it. But the decals... they're awesome. I don't care if it's pink and girly, it has doggies!

I love decals. I would wear them more often if I got to do 'real' manicures more often! It seems like I'm taking off my polish every 10 minutes and I don't want to waste the awesome. But every time I wear them, they're from Fing'rs EDGE. I love it that there's a brand that realizes that not every girl wants frilly frou-frou flowers. Some of us want bats!

Zoya Guest Post by the amazing KarlaSugar!

I have a fun surprise for you! Today, KarlaSugar, aka "The Arm", the genius behind the blog The Next Best Thing To Going Shopping Yourself , is blogging about polish on my blog today! If you're not familiar with The Next Best Thing To Going Shopping Yourself, it is an incredible beauty blog. Not only is KarlaSugar a total sweetie, she's one of the hardest working bloggers out there- she SWATCHES EVERYTHING! And, in turn, makes me BUY EVERYTHING! Really, her blog is a bit of a dangerous place to be.... But it's so, so wonderful. Anyway, the bottom line is- KarlaSugar rocks and here she is on the topic of Zoya's Fall collections.

There are plenty of reasons to get excited for fall: the weather starts to cool down, kids go back to school, and — as a result of the first two — I associate the time of year with shopping.

Zoya is a new-to-me brand of nail polish, and I love both the quality and the price (in my head, OPIs froze at $6, and it hurts me to pay more). When I saw the Truth and Dare Collections on their site, a lightbulb went off in my head. Cheaper than buying clothes (or even makeup), I could have an entirely new "polish wardrobe" for fall.

These 12 polishes are, in my opinion, a work of genius. Every color in a winner, and between the lot of them, I think I have everything I could possibly need until spring. I want to build a tiny closet for them, so I can fling open the little doors and ask myself, "what to wear today?"
Dare is an assortment of cremes — with the exception of a little shimmer in Ibiza. Truth is all shimmers (so festive!); look for the pretty little sparkles in Anaka. And of course, Scrangie has taken gorgeous on-nail photos of these.

Zoya polishes are $6; the collections are $36 — so you're free to make substitutions or order shades individually with no penalty on price. You can order online at Zoya's website (free shipping at $55!), and their site has a salon locator, in case you're one of the insanely lucky people to have a brick-and-mortar near you.

My Interview with Essie Weingarten of Essie Cosmetics!

Recently I had the privilege of interviewing one of the biggest names in nail polish- Essie Weingarten, creator of the eponymous nail polish line.

I am extremely grateful to Essie for taking time out of her day to allow me to interview her.

Scrangie: I'll get this one out of the way first, but I have to ask... Do you have a favorite nail polish shade or signature color?

Essie: I love all my colors! But I have to admit that I wear Bordeaux on my toes all year round and I always wear a sheer combo, like Ballet Slippers with Mademoiselle, on my hands.

S: How did you get started in creating nail polish? What made you decide to start Essie Cosmetics?

E: As a little girl, getting my nails done was the biggest treat I could imagine. I loved the whole experience of it. Your hands make such a statement about who you want to be and years ago, the polish choices at the salon didn’t reflect that; they were so limiting, so I took a risk and made shades that were new and exciting.

S: Essie is known for its delicate, feminine sheer shades. Any tips or tricks on applying and wearing sheer polish?

E: You should start with a good base coat like Essie’s First Base Base Coat. Then add your first layer of nail polish and wait two minutes before adding the second layer. Waiting two minutes in between layers allows time for the polish to set and prevents it from chipping. Finally, top it off with a great top coat, like Good to Go or Matte About You for a unique matte finish. To clean up any polish left around nail on skin, use our Nail Corrector Pen.

S: Nail polish connoisseurs are always looking for unique polish shades to add to their collection, which brings me to the topic of green nail polish. In particular, Essie's discontinued Dominica Green shade has become a much-coveted cult classic. What are your thoughts on green nail polish? Will we ever see another green from Essie?

E: As you know, we just recently came out with the limited edition North Fork Collection which included Greenport, a dreamy aquamarine hue. Jade green was such a fashion-forward statement on the runways this past year, so
you may see green again soon!

S: Where do you get inspiration for creating new shades of polish, and how do the names get chosen? What is the process like for coming up with new colors each season?

E: Every season I personally attend fashion shows in New York, London, Paris, Berlin and Milan. I get my inspiration from the textures and colors on the runway and I also draw inspiration from colors I see all around me every day like interior decorating trends and even automobile design. I come up with each polish name on my own and ask my staff here at essie for their input. Everyone votes on their favorites and that’s how the polish names come to fruition!

S: You're a busy woman- what do you do to relax? Do you have a certain relaxation ritual to unwind after a stressful day?

E: I love to get manicures and pedicures once a week. I’ve been going to the same manicurist, Josephine, for several years. I also enjoy spending time at my house in the Hamptons, cooking and gardening.

S: What is your first memory of nail polish? Do you remember your first nail polish?

E: When I was 12-years-old, my mom began rewarding me for good behavior by taking me to get a manicure. I loved it from the beginning and have been addicted to polish ever since.

S: How do you like your nails- short or long? Sheer or colorful? Do you do them yourself?

E: I keep my nails at a natural length that compliments my long nail beds. I get my manicure once a week and usually stick to sheer color combos.

S: A lot of men are starting to pay attention to the health and appearance of their nails. A lot of men even like to wear nail polish! Do you have any product recommendations and nail care tips specifically for men?

E: Men’s nails and cuticles are just as important as women’s! The essie Cuticle Pen and Apricot Cuticle Oil are both great products for men as well as the Crystal File. Men should keep their nails short and clean. For a semi-gloss finish, essie Man-e-cure is the perfect clear topcoat. Or, our new product, Matte About You which leaves a matte finish on nails. And for the very adventurous man who wears dark polish, try Matte About You on top for a textured, matte finish. Our Naturally Clean line is a big hit with men as well – the Purifying Hand Treatment is a great product to keep on their desks at work to keep hands smooth and refreshed throughout the day.

S: Your name is synonymous with nail polish- everyone knows Essie! But are you into other beauty products as well? Any non-nail beauty item that you can't be without?

E: I love experimenting with all different makeup brands! I always get a kick out of trying all different kinds of beauty products.

There you have it! The answers to some of my most pondered questions about this lovely nail polish maven!

To see what Essie has to offer, check out their website at http://www.essie.com and don't forget to check out the New Releases section to see what's in store for this year!
