Orly Cosmic FX Collection Fall 2010

I posted the comparisons a while back, but now I'm finally ready to post the whole collection. Took me a while to get some good pictures of Space Cadet! Still not perfect, but better than my first try.

Remember how much we all freaked out over the press release? They're different than I expected but they were in no way a let down for me- I freaking love this collection.

Galaxy Girl. This one was so hard to capture but so beautiful in real life. It's a red-brown base with dominant teal blue flash which comes from these lovely glass-gleck like metallic particles and it has a complimentary dark pink flash at a different angle. There's even a little bit of purple and gold visible at certain angles. It's dark, which is awesome, dark duochromes are some of my favorite duochromes! And no frost! Yay!

Halley's Comet. On a side note, my bottle of this reads "Halle's Comet" like Halle Berry but the name of this according to Orly is Halley's Comet... confusing but kinda funny! Anyway, if you've seen Zoya Charla or OPI Catch Me In Your Net, you've seen this. It has more green to it in real life but my camera likes to pull out the blue in it. Blue/turquoise foily glittery green duochrome mermaid polish. Totally gorgeous, would definitely recommend getting this if you don't already have the Zoya or OPI.

It's Not Rocket Science. It's Rocket Surgery. Hehe. But seriously... super beautiful polish. Murky warm green with gold and yellow and blue sparkle and slight duochrome with a swampy green sheer base. Strange description but the end result is fantastic! Also, this is the most opaque of the recently-released similar colors and has more blue tone to it than the others.

Lunar Eclipse. Extremely pretty rich blue sparkle with purple duochrome. Like Halley's Comet it is not unique, but despite being duplicated it's still gorgeous.

Out Of This World. Are you drowning or waving? I just want you to save me... Should we try to get along? Just try to get along... A vampy blue-toned purple with glittery gold duochrome. Similar to Zoya Julieanne. Like the rest of the shades, I have nothing negative to say about this color, it's amazing even if it isn't unique.

Saved the best for last....

Space Cadet. I tried so many angles and so many different types of lighting to try to capture the awesomeness that is Space Cadet but I still feel like I failed to convey just how freakin' sweet this polish is. It's a glittery, sparkly, foily duochrome... And when I say 'duochrome' I really mean 'multichrome'... bad habit. But I don't feel like always counting how many colors they flash! This one is a purple base with dominant golden green duochrome. It has pink, it has orange, it has green and gold and yellow, it has purple and even a little blue. It's practially a rainbow of duochrome sparkle. Truly magnificent. I can't rave enough about this color, this is one of the best shades I've seen in my life and it's already made it into my favorite polishes of all time list. You have to see this in person to really enjoy how much it switches between colors.

The formula on these was great. I'll admit I didn't have high hopes for it, but it exceeded my expectations. They're all opaque- three coats of each in these pictures-, they dry much more quickly than I'm used to for Orly and they went on pretty smoothly. Only a little runny. Other than that they were perfect. Not super three-free textured like I thought they might be.

One of the best collections ever. I know a lot of people were disappointed that some of the colors are duplicates of other colors, but the way I see it... If you look at this as a whole collection, by itself, without comparing it to what's already been released, it's perfection. The only way I could improve on this collection would be to make six more shades like this. So in that sense, I'm not disappointed. But, since we are all polish junkies and we do follow the latest releases like hungry vultures, we have already seen some of these colors. It would be nice if every shade was completely unique, but the collection as a whole is undeniably awesome.

I do have one complaint about the collection and it has nothing to do with the colors. It's the price. Orly raised the price of this collection to $10 per polish. Do I think they're worth the price? Yes and no. Yes because I've paid more than that for polishes not even half as cool. No because the other companies who released the exact same pigment type/polish type didn't raise the prices and they're just as good. $10 is not very expensive when it comes to polish, but it is a little shocking to see from Orly which has traditionally been one of the lower-priced of the salon brands.

We're seeing so much of this new glittery pigment lately. I wish they'd do more with it! It has the potential to make some really great colors from what I've seen in these. Get to work, polish companies! Don't just make redundant shades!

(These were sent to me for review.)

Comparison: SpaRitual It's Raining Men vs. Orly Sky Blue Pink

It just dawned on me what that Meow Skeptic shadow reminds me of- Orly Sky Blue Pink!

I don't know if I've ever posted that color here... It's an old one but it's really, really pretty.

I was getting ready to edit some of those China Glaze photos so I was trying to clear out all the pictures I hadn't edited yet, and this comparison was one of them! Yes... it has been open and unedited for months... that's how far behind I've gotten. Yikes! I mean, when did I take these pictures, January or something? O_o

Anyway, the reason I did the comparison was that while I was swatching my Orly collection, I noticed that a lot of the SpaRituals I had in the same drawer seemed identical to Orlys... and you know what? They were. This is one of them:

Index and ring finger: SpaRitual It's Raining Men
Middle and pinkie finger: Orly Sky Blue Pink

Very slight differences in formula and intensity, but still the same color. I'm sure Sky Blue Pink has received a formula update since I bought my ancient bottle, but mine's very thin and needed four coats. I did four coats of the SpaRitual too, just to be even. The SpaRitual seemed more opaque. I might have to pick up a new formula bottle of Sky Blue Pink one of these days to see if they thickened it at all.

And this is what reminded me:

It's totally the same color! Periwinkle blue with a really strong pink-gold duochrome! Sweeeeeeet. I love when I have an eyeshadow the same color as an awesome nail polish.

Orly Plastix Matte/Satin Finish Collection Summer 2010

Another collection I'm just not feeling the love for... can't wait for the rest of the fall and winter collections to bring us some sparkle!

Old School Orange. Light/medium orange creme with a semi-matte finish.

Purple Pleather. Does not look this blue in real life, but it's a blue-based purple creme with semi-matte finish.

Retro Red. Light coral red creme with semi-matte finish.

Viridian Vinyl. Medium teal creme with semi-matte finish. A bit darker and greener in real life, somewhat similar to Sally Hansen Fairy Teal.

The formula on these was good. Thick, which is normal for mattes, but not terribly difficult to apply. Drying time is fast, which is also normal for mattes. The only problem I had was some bubbling because of the thickness of the polish and it's more obvious because there's not shimmer to hide it.

I know a lot of people liked these, but I'm not really understanding the point of these. From the press release I thought they'd be a new type of finish with the look of plastic, either totally matte like on some electronics or very glossy and glassy looking like hard plastic. But these? They're half-assed matte. I personally can not stand that rubbery, sorta shiny but sorta dull half matte (or satin) finish. To me it looks like I've been wearing a matte polish for a week already... I want my mattes to be matte! Cause they end up looking like this after a day or so anyway. That and there's nothing terribly special about these colors. I mean, they're good colors, but honestly it's nothing you can't do with a regular polish and a matte topcoat. Purple Pleather looks kinda like China Glaze Grape Pop, Viridian Vinyl looks like Sally Hansen Fairy Teal, Old School Orange looks like OPI Flit a Bit and I'm sure Retro Red looks like something but I can't think of a light red at the moment.

So.... yeah... that's my thoughts on these. I just don't get it. No offense intended if you love these, I just think there's nothing unique about them!

Luckily the Cosmic FX collection made up for Plastix's lack of awesomeness. I'll get to posting that soon.

Orly Cosmic FX Comparisons

Once again I'll out the cart before the horse and post the comparisons before I post the real swatches.

As soon as I saw these I knew they were similar to a some of this year's new releases. The only comparison I haven't done is Out Of This World versus Zoya Julieanne and Mimi- my mom has my bottles of Julieanne and Mimi. (Which she loves, by the way)

EDIT:  Pretty in Dayton has a great comparison with Julieanne!

Left to right (ring to index): OPI Designer Series Magic, Sally Hansen Ultra HD Laser, Orly Lunar Eclipse.

You can see that they're not quite identical. Minor differences between each of the colors. OPI is the darkest and has the least duochrome, Sally Hansen is the lightest, most sheer and has the most duochrome and the Orly is in between. Orly has good opacity and a good amount of duochrome.

Have a look at the level of sheerness:
Left to right (index to ring)- All one coat- Orly Lunar Eclipse, Sally Hansen Laser, OPI Magic.

Lunar Eclipse, Laser and Magic at two coats. You can see that the OPI is almost entirely opaque with the Orly just slightly more sheer.

Left to right (ring to index) China Glaze Zombie Zest, SpaRitual Optical Illusion, Orly It's Not Rocket Science.

As with the previous one, pretty close but no exact matches. While Optical Illusion and Zombie Zest are definite dupes, It's Not Rocket Science is different- more opaque, more blue, more duochrome.

To show the difference in opacity:
Two coats each of (left to right) Zombie Zest, Optical Illusion, It's Not Rocket Science. You can see how much the Orly stands out here in terms of opacity. Wow.

Left to right (ring to index) Zoya Charla, OPI Catch Me In Your Net, Orly Halle's Comet.

These are all so close it's hard not to call them duplicates, but as you can see in the picture, there are minute differences. Charla is bluest. OPI is lightest. Orly is greenest. Zoya has the most sparkle. Orly seems most opaque but very similar to Zoya. Here's one coat of each:

Left to right, one coat: Zoya Charla, OPI Catch Me In Your Net, Orly Halle's Comet.

I was expecting the Orly ones to be really sheer, but they surprised me by being the most opaque of all! Bonus.

And these were sent to me for review. Still workin' on finishing my full swatches and perhaps compare the Zoyas with Out of This World. Whew!
